Spekboom Restoration Project

Description:

he Spekboom project is a native species reforestation project in the Eastern and Western Cape of South Africa

Methodology:

Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) under Verra VM0047 + CCB (Verra ID No.5027)

Status:

Phase 1 started in May 2024. Phase 2 reached Final Investment Decision (FID) in April 2026

Scale:

Phase 1 is 10,000 hectares, Phase 2 is an additional 50,000 hectares and the full project will be 100,000 hectares.

Quality Rating:

Ex-ante Rating of 'AA.pre with low execution risk' from BeZero Carbon, placing it in the top ~5% of ARR projects for which BeZero has issued ex-ante ratings.

Farmers will receive inputs, training, planting labor, fencing and other non-monetary benefits in addition to fixed lease payments for areas enrolled in the ARR program and a revenue share from the sale of carbon credits to ensure long-term incentive alignment and equitable distribution of benefits.

The project will:

  • Introduce rotational grazing and native-species based silvopasture cattle grazing, allowing for the sustainable intensification of currently unsustainable cattle farming, a key driver of deforestation in the Peruvian amazon
  • Reforest degraded pasture that is made available via the silvopasture model with mixed native species ARR, and
  • Contractually protect remnant standing forests on farms participating in the program.
