Technology Manager - South Africa (Spekboom Project)

We have a build-own-operate model and specialise in the design, development and operation of carbon credit projects that help combat climate change while promoting biodiversity conservation, economic growth and social development in the countries in which we operate.

POSITION PURPOSE

Reporting directly to the Business Director, the Technology Manager will be responsible for the implementation and support of the project tech stack on a global scale native forest regeneration project, Spekboom Restoration Project, on the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The role also includes the enhancement of the project’s technological infrastructure and assets.

To be successful in the role, the successful candidate will need to collaborate closely with multiple internal and external stakeholders and manage the entire project technology function.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • Establish and deliver a project tech stack implementation and support roadmap together with project team;
  • Responsible for maintaining technology strategy with its overall objectives. This involves understanding the needs and goals and then identifying how technology can support and enable those objectives.
  • Update and maintain technology roadmap that outlines the evolution of the tech stack over the lifetime of the project.
  • Managing the technology budget, allocating resources efficiently, and ensuring that technology investments align with the strategic priorities. This involves cost analysis, vendor negotiations, and financial forecasting.
  • Manage close relationships with technology vendors;
  • Develop and execute strategies for managing organizational change associated with the technology solution;
  • Develop and execute technology roadmap related to software and hardware updates, and relevant system and data migrations.
  • Manage unit testing, functional testing, integration testing and system testing;
  • Manage implementation of final technology solutions;
  • Manage user training across all teams;
  • Provide ongoing technical support and assistance to end-users, addressing their questions and issues;
  • Implement security measures to protect the solution from threats and ensure data security;
  • Establish and manage post go-live technology support and maintenance solutions;
  • Conduct post implementation review.

  • Project management skills to ensure projects are delivered on time and at a high quality according to specifications.
  • Capabilities and experience in enabling organisations to enable technology to optimize their projects;
  • A passion for digital tools and data management;
  • Strong people leadership skills;
  • Sound written and verbal communications skills; and
  • A passion for contributing to resolving the climate emergency.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a degree in information technology or business degree with strong information and technology background.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • The position requires approximately 5 years’ experience in relevant roles;
  • Customer experience or vendor engagement/relationship management experience; and
  • Relevant experience in large scale projects from adjacent industries such as agriculture, forestry infrastructure or energy is important. A passion for solving the climate crisis is important but experience in carbon offset projects is not essential.

POSITION LOCATION 

  • South Africa, ideally based in Gqeberha (previously named Port Elizabeth).

LANGUAGE

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement and Afrikaans & isiXhosa is preferable.
