Finance Manager - South African Reforestation Project

With our efforts on this project and others in our portfolio we intend to lift and shape the market for the better, and this role will play a key role in that mission.


This ultra-high-quality carbon credit project consists of replanting 100,000 hectares of the native Spekboom species in South Africa. The project will transform large areas of the rural South African landscape and will generate significant carbon credits, contributing meaningfully to both the restoration of the native thicket biome and to removing CO2 from the atmosphere.


Reporting to the Project Director and Project CFO, the Finance Manager is a key member of the project leadership team, responsible for overseeing and managing various financial activities within the organization and project.

This position has 2 key roles:

  • Financial management of Imperative’s South African SPV including the maintenance of accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, FX management and providing valuable financial insights to support decision-making. This function reports directly to the Imperative Project Director.
  • Project reporting, including the maintenance of accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and working closely with the cost control team to ensure accurate project cost forecast. This function reports to the project team CFO.


Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with international accounting standards, including IFRS.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Collaborate with the project leadership team department heads to develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses, offering recommendations for cost optimization.
  • General Ledger Management: Maintain the general ledger, ensuring timely and accurate recording of transactions, reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct in-depth financial analyses to identify trends, opportunities, and risks, providing recommendations for improvement and cost-saving measures.
  • Audit and Compliance: Help coordinate annual financial audits and tax filings, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. Assist with internal and external audit requests.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously assess and improve financial processes, controls, and systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy.


  • Accounting standards: strong knowledge and experience in international accounting standards including IFRS.
  • Financial software: Experience with financial software; preferably Xero and NetSuite.
  • Currencies: Experience accounting and reporting in multiple currencies.
  • Projects: capital projects-based business experience, particularly commodities or resources experience is desirable.
  • Attention to detail: Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Work style: Self-motivated and ability to work effectively both independently and in a team.
  • Time Management: Effectively manage and prioritise tasks to meet deadlines and handle multiple responsibilities.
  • Integrity: Demonstrate a high level of personal integrity and be passionate about making a positive difference to the world.


Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Chartered Accountant is strongly preferred.


A minimum of 10 years of relevant accounting experience, with a proven track record in progressively responsible roles.


South Africa, preferably Port Elizabeth


Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement and Afrikaans is beneficial.
