We have a build-own-operate model and specialise in the design, development and operation of carbon credit projects that help combat climate change while promoting biodiversity conservation, economic growth and social development in the countries in which we operate.

Imperative is developping an ultra-high-quality project that consists of 10,000 hectares of native species restoration activities in its first phase, targeting to revegetate 100,000 hectares.  The project will transform areas of the Eastern and Western Cape of South Africa and will generate significant carbon offsets in the race to solve the world’s climate emergency. POSITION PURPOSE

Reporting directly to the Head of South Africa and to the Chief Carbon Officer, the Carbon and Impact Asset Development Manager is responsible for turning forest restoration opportunities into registered and validated carbon removal project, and ultimately verified carbon units, via the application of specialist technical expertise and analysis.

She/he will collaborate with field science colleagues, consultants and carbon headCo teams to refine protocols for monitoring and implementation, organizing the ground data collection process, managing the validation and verification cycles, producing the corresponding reports for publication.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project Development and Monitoring
    • Lead the planning and content development necessary for project certification, including creating work plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
    • Update Project Design Documents (PDDs) and Monitoring Reports
    • Establish emissions baselines and oversee necessary surveys.
    • Oversee the validation, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) processes in line with applicable carbon standards and monitoring protocols.
    • Conduct site visits, manage stakeholder engagements, and travel to project locations as required.
    • Coordinate technical reviews and quality checks.
  • Knowledge and Expertise Development
    • Stay current with developments in the South Africa carbon market and environmental policy.
    • Share and embed this knowledge within the team and across Imperative.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Participate, when required, to local stakeholder meetings to ensure project understanding and buy-in.
  • Schedule and Cost Management: Participate to the project’s schedule and cost planning for the activities related to the domain of expertise.
  • Quality: Deliver the project in accordance with the project Quality Plan.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks and opportunities and develop mitigation and exploitation plans to ensure project success and minimize negative impacts.
  • Reporting: Prepare regular progress reports and other documentation required for internal and external stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

Key skills and attributes required for the role are;

  • In-depth knowledge of international carbon standards, notably VCS and CCB (Verra), as well as familiarity with forest carbon methodologies.
  • Highly analytical and detail-oriented but practical and adaptable approach to problem-solving, with an appetite to get involved with both exceptional analysis and on-the-ground project development workstreams.
  • Strong technical skills including forest inventory techniques, carbon modeling and forest biometrics.
  • Entrepreneurial, proactive, target-driven and hands-on approach with the ability to adapt to different teams, stakeholders, and work environments.
  • Strong analytical, structured, and project management skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English with an ability to clearly synthesize large amounts of technical information.

DESIRABLE SKILSS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Demonstrated skills in GIS/remote sensing and data analysis.
  • Strong proficiency in statistics and numerical analysis.
  • Interest in social aspects and stakeholder engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

The position requires at least 5 years’ experience in carbon asset development, with a proven track record in PDD writing and managing the entire validation, monitoring, verification, and issuance process of ARR projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

The position requires a relevant degree and, ideally, a Master’s level from local renowned university.
